Many urban thinkers and policy professionals are actively discussing issues of housing, including how to fund new affordable construction starts and how to increase opportunities for access to these affordable housing options. However, a sometimes overlooked concept is that of the nation’s aging building stock, and specifically aging affordable housing, and how these structures and their programs can be preserved. The preservation of housing involves navigating the physical needs that rehabilitation projects involve, such as how to incorporate energy efficient and sustainable systems into old buildings. It also requires strategizing how to preserve or renew the funding and subsidies that have supported the affordability of housing. This discussion will include experts on the legal, community, financial, and design components of the physical and programmatic preservation efforts. |
